Apple Whiskey Cider | Slow Cooked

Any whiskey enthusiasts out there?  If so you are in luck because we have our very first alcoholic recipe for you, Apple Whiskey Cider prepared in a slow cooker!  Matt is usually the go-to-guy when it comes to picking out a specific brand of whiskey (I prefer vodka). He recommended that our readers try Wild Turkey 81, a smooth tasting and non-GMO bourbon whiskey.  Though I’m not much of a whiskey girl, Wild Turkey 81 ended up making for an excellent addition to this spicy hot beverage.

This recipe combines a blend of freshly pressed juices from organic red pears and a variety of locally harvested New England apples.  In pervious recipe articles I’ve touched upon the difference between cooking with organic produce verses conventional.  When cooking or baking with apples it is especially important to purchase organic.  Conventional apples are some of the most heavily pesticide-filled produce out there, causing longterm health problems if overly consumed.  If you end up using conventional pears or apples for this recipe I would recommend peeling the skin off beforehand.

Before adding your choice of whiskey the apple cider is simmered with a seasonal blend of spices and dried citrus peel, which you can find in a majority of mulling spice mixes.  Then set to a low simmer, the cider sits in the slow cooker up to 4 hours, filling your entire kitchen with autumnal magic.  Enjoy your apple whiskey cider with your favorite brand of whiskey, this festive recipe is definitely one to share with friends and family members at your next holiday party.

Serving Size: 8 Cups

  • 5 organic apples, cored
  • 2 organic red pears, cored
  • 16 oz spring water
  • 4 Tablespoons mulling spices
  • 4-6 cinnamon sticks
  • bottle of whiskey, 1 shot per glass
  • 4-8 sprigs fresh rosemary, garnish
Additional Materials:
  • slow cooker
  • Vitamix or standard juicer
  • strainer
  • cheesecloth or tea infuser
  • small cutting knife
  • wooden spatula
  • serving ladle
  • 4 – 8 drinking glasses

Preparing Your Apple Whiskey Cider:

Using a small sharp knife, cut the apples and pears into large pieces.  Discard the cores and any seeds.

Add the apple and pear slices into the Vitamix (or standard juicer).  Pour 16 oz of water into Vitamix and blend until all ingredients are fully combined into a liquid form.

Strain the apple/pear juice over the slow cooker, making sure to catch any remaining bits of fruit.

Tie 4 Tablespoons of mulling spices into a cheesecloth square and add to the slow cooker.  Or if you own a tea infuser feel free to fill it with mulling spices instead.  Either method works well.

Add in 4 whole cinnamon sticks.

Turn the slow cooker on low heat and bring the cider to a simmer, about 2 – 4 hours.  Stir occasionally.

Once you’re ready to serve, ladle 1 cup of hot cider into each glass (this recipe can make up to 8 cups).  Then top off each glass of cider with a shot of whiskey and gently stir.

For a festive touch, garnish your glass of cider with a sprig of fresh rosemary.  Happy drinking!
